MICHAEL LEO WHEELER

HEADLAND.…Michael Leo Wheeler, a resident of Headland, Alabama, passed away Tuesday morning, December 29, 2020, at his home. He was 74.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 P.M. Sunday, January 3, 2021, at Camp Springs Baptist Church Cemetery, with Reverend Scott Wyatt officiating. All Covid-19 social distancing will be observed and mask will be mandatory. Wright Funeral Home & Crematory are in charge of the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested donations be made in Michael’s name to SABA Ministry Center1308 Ross Clark Circle, Dothan, AL 36301; or Concord Baptist Church 6286 County Road 73 Headland, Alabama 36345.

Mr. Wheeler was born in Pahokee, Florida to the late William Lorenzo Wheeler and Ruth Kirk Wheeler. He was a 1966 Graduate of Immokalee High School. He had previously lived in South Bay, FL (1946-1952), Immokalee, FL (1952-1975), Pigeon Forge, TN (1975-1980), Immokalee, FL (1980-1999), Palmdale, FL (1999-2004), before residing in Headland, Alabama. He was self-employed most of his life. He also worked in maintenance at LaBelle Middle School and Emmanuel Christian School. He and his late wife also owned and operated Mama B’s restaurant. He faithfully attended Concord Baptist Church. He was a faithful and hardworking volunteer at Southeast Alabama Baptist Ministry Center. He enjoyed serving along side many friends. He loved the laughs when they all worked together. He and his late wife, Betty, lead the youth at Palmdale Baptist Church for many years. Mr. Wheeler was a kind and quiet man. He loved the Lord Jesus Christ. If you were friends with him on social media, he was not quiet about that. He loved his children and grandchildren more than words could express. He was always there when his children needed him. He’d always drop what he was doing to be there for them. He volunteered every Monday and Wednesday at the SABA Ministry Center. Before the pandemic, he would meet his friends each morning at Hardee’s. All the staff and most of the locals knew him and all the “Hardee’s gang”. Michael always kept up with old friends and family that were miles apart. He enjoyed their annual family reunions and getting together with his cousins. He had such a love for the outdoors. Each weekend when his children were growing up, they would camp, fish and canoe on the Fisheating Creek. He loved the Smokey Mountains and the colors of the fall. He was creative and loved to build things. As a young man he built a hunting camp in the Everglades, yet he never hunted. If he had an image in his mind, he could build it, with flowers or wood. He loved children and animals. He was an amazing husband, daddy, paw paw and friend.

Along with his parents he is also preceded in death by his wife of forty-three years, Betty Louise Rice Wheeler and his best friend JC “Jake” Forrester.

Leaving to cherish his memories are his daughter, Melanie Wheeler Deal (John) of Headland, AL; his sons, Shelton William Wheeler (Joanie) of Headland, AL, and Michael Todd Wheeler (Misty) of Cowarts, AL; his grandchildren, Danielle Deal, John Parker Deal, Sebastian Leo Wheeler, and Renesmee Weldon; his sister, Jettie Mays of Immokalee, FL; and his brother, Dewayne Wheeler of Immokalee, FL.
