Troy, Alabama

Troy…..Andrew Stuart Johnson, a resident of Troy and formerly of Eufaula, passed away Sunday, March 22, 2026 after his courageous seven-year battle against cancer . He was 56.

Andy was born on August 4, 1969 to Randy and Pat Johnson at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana. In 1985, Andy's family moved to Port Angeles, WA where he attended Port Angeles High School until his graduation in 1987.

At Port Angeles High School, Andy enjoyed playing football and baseball. Andy's accomplishments academically and athletically, particularly in the sport of baseball, led to a scholarship from Troy University in Alabama, where he continued playing baseball. A lifelong lover of baseball, he was especially proud to have been a member of the 1987 Aggies Baseball team that reached the World Series, a remarkable achievement he cherished throughout his life. Andy graduated in 1993 with a Bachelor's degree in Administration and Physical Education.

Armed with a passion for education and a strong athletic foundation, Andy began teaching for the Metro Nashville Public Schools, Nashville, Tennessee. He taught PE and coached sports including baseball and football. During his years as a teacher and coach, Andy was recognized for his contributions to the students and athletes, receiving many awards including "2005 Baseball Coach of the Year" for the state of Tennessee and a nomination for "2013 Teacher of the Year" in Nashville. Motivated to continue his education, Andy attended Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, Tennessee where he received a Master's degree in Administration.

Andy's strong sense of duty called him to serve from 1993 until 2013 with the Army Reserve as part of the 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment. In 2010, Andy was called to active duty where he served as a Gunner in Mosul, Iraq. During his tour of duty, Andy received 13 medals for exemplary service. Upon returning from Iraq, Andy suffered from medical issues, which eventually resulted in his early retirement from teaching in 2017. After his retirement, Andy moved to the "Big Bass Capital of the World" Eufaula, Alabama where he could spend more time enjoying his favorite pastime of fishing.

He was preceded in death by his mother Patricia Johnson, grandparents Dr. Dan and Jean Sanders, and Stuart and Ruth Johnson. His family extends warmest appreciation to good friend Raymond Sexton of Troy, AL.
