DOTHAN… Charles Roney, a former resident of Headland, Alabama, passed away Thursday morning, August 21, 2025, at Extendicare Health & Rehabilitation. He was 90.

A memorial gathering in his honor will be held on Sunday, August 24, 2025, from 2:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. at Wright Funeral Home and Crematory Chapel. Wright Funeral Home & Crematory is in charge of the arrangements.

Born in Henry County, Alabama, Mr. Roney was the son of the late Roy Roney and Verna J. Royals Roney. He was a proud graduate of Newville High School, Class of 1953, and a member of First Baptist Church of Headland. In 1953, he was selected as an All-State football player as a standout of Newville High School. Throughout his life, he worked as a dedicated farmer and a successful crop insurance adjuster. He loved farming and agriculture and devoted his life to hard work in this area.

Charles will be remembered for his beautiful voice having sung at countless weddings, funerals and church revivals. He also will be remembered for his quiet strength, his love for his community, and his unwavering commitment to his family. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, humility, and the enduring values of hard work and faith.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, Rick Roney; his siblings, Nina Cutchall, Jo Nell Cutchall, Betty Jean Thompson, and Louie Frank Roney.

Surviving relatives include his wife of 71 years, Betty Carter Roney; his son, Dr. Steve Roney and his wife, Melissa; his daughter-in-law Lisa Roney; his grandchildren, Lydia Wright (Tommy), Taylor Roney (Lauren), Austin Phillips (Kristen), and Alan Phillips; his great-grandchildren, Jacob Wright, Luke Wright, A.J. Phillips, Aiden Phillips, and Mason Roney.
