Joseph "Haywood" Jones

MIDLAND CITY, ALABAMA........Joseph “Haywood” Jones, a resident of Midland City and formerly of Kinsey, passed away late Saturday, July 05, 2025. He was 84.

Memorial services will be held 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, July 9, 2025, at Wright Funeral Home and Crematory Chapel with Reverend Brad Hardy officiating. Wright Funeral Home & Crematory is in charge of the arrangements.

Born in Hartford, Alabama, Mr. Jones was the son of the late Raymond Jones and Susie Mae Windham Jones. He was a proud graduate of Slocomb High School, Class of 1958, and went on to earn his Associates degree from Wallace College. He enjoyed a long career in the I&C department at the Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant before retiring.

Haywood had a passion for learning and solving puzzles—crosswords, sudoku, and brain teasers of all kinds. He also found great joy in the outdoors, particularly fishing and hunting. His favorite TV was Alabama football, Atlanta Braves and Gunsmoke. The primary focus and love of his life, outside his family and friends, was his church family and his service to Jesus through that church family.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty Ruth Davis Jones; his son, Joseph Haywood “Joey” Jones, Jr.; and his brother, Cecil O’Neil Jones.

He is survived by his children, Velma Susanne “Susie” Jones-Szoldra (Stanley), Cindy Mechelle Jones Austin (Bobby), and Michael Jones; grandchildren, Rebecca Talley (Shawn), Brian Austin, Ashley Elizabeth Spivey, Olivia Blaire Dufresne (Scott), and Emily Brooke Austin; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will miss him dearly.
