WILMER “SPEED” TOWNSEND

CLIO, AL... Wilmer Townsend, a resident of Clio, Alabama, passed away Tuesday afternoon December 20,2022, at Dale Medical Center. He was 93, leaving to cherish his memories is his wife Elaine Hawkins Townsend of 27 amazing years.

A celebration of Life will be April 15, 2023 in Clio, Alabama.

Mr. Townsend was born in Zolfo Springs, Florida to the late Edward Arthur Townsend and Minneloa Williams Townsend, where he and his 6 siblings shared many adventures during their childhood. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force. His Military career led him to Merced, CA, eventually moving to Sonoma County, Ca., where he and his twin brother Wylie, raised their families. He leaves behind many nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly. He and Elaine returned to his beloved Alabama family in his retirement.

He was a sixty year member of Operators Engineers Local 3 Union, working as a heavy equipment operator.

As an avid abalone diver, he enjoyed the ocean, spending time traveling and camping. His family loved hearing his wonderful life stories. With his infectious smile, he brought a calm and richness of character which was admired by all who knew and loved him.

Speedy was and will continue to be the ultimate "Safe Space" in all our lives. We will forever share his stories and speak of his beautiful soul.

Along with his parents, he was also proceeded in death by his daughter, Deby Veltri and all of his siblings.

Leaving to cherish his memories to his wife, Diana Elaine Hawkins Townsend, his daughter Susan Wilson (Gerry), his bonus children, Diana Reed, Donald Austin (Cindy), and Darrell Austin; his son-in-law Michael Veltri; his grandchildren, Tara Equels, Christopher Wilson, Blaze Austin, Bristol Austin, Michael Veltri Jr. (Lori), Michele Veltri Mercer (Gene), and Matthew Veltri (Bowwy); and many great-grandchildren and God-Children.
